What is motivation and concepts of motivation?

“Motivation starts with you so get motivated! Believe in Yourself and Believe in Others!”

What is motivation?

One of the most important factors that lead goals to the drive is Motivation. It is the goal oriented behaviors. Motivation can be attained with one self as well as by others. It is of various types. Getting a bonus or appraisal is also a motivation for an employee or the complements for good work is also a motivation to work hard. Motivation inspires one self from inner as well as from the external factors.

According to one of the universally accepted definitions of motivation, it is an internal condition that influences one’s behavior by giving it direction. Motivations is also been defined as a wish or want which directs and energizes behavior that is oriented to achieve a goal.

Concepts of motivation

There are two concepts of motivation one is intrinsic and other is extrinsic.

Intrinsic motivation is the motivation that is determined by an interest or enjoyment in the work itself, and it develops within the person rather than relying on someone else. According to the research intrinsic motivation is usually associated with high educational achievement and enjoyment by students.

Students are generally intrinsically motivated if they:

  • Trait their educational results to internal factors that they can control
  • Believe that they achieved what they desire and worked for they are interested in mastering a topic rather than just learning to achieve good grades.

Extrinsic motivation are from the external factors like rewards like money, bonus, coercion and threat of punishment etc. competition platys a very vital role in this concept as due to competition and ability to win a performer work more hard and thus get motivated. People cheering on the person and trophies or certificates are also extrinsic incentives.

Both concepts of motivation play a significant role in motivating a person.

A Metaphysical and Spiritual Treatise on Depression

One day I was talking to a friend when suddenly suicide thoughts came to my mind. I asked her if she knew anyone who was feeling suicidal. She dropped her head, and pointed to herself. “Yeah, me,” she said. “I can’t take it anymore. I don’t want to live another day.” I treated her to ice cream and we had a long talk. I shared with her how I struggle with depression and could relate to suicide wishes.

It is hard for most people to imagine that a person could be so desperate to even contemplate let alone commit an act of suicide. Most people are uncomfortable with the subject and prefer not to think about or deal with it. Some of us are not so fortunate as to not have to deal with it. I know how comforting it is to have someone else to talk to who shares our struggles. When I did a research paper in graduate school on suicide, I cried when I read the tales that drove some unfortunate miserable ones to such desperate and drastic measures. Then I would nod my head and give thanks and say, “there but by the grace of God go I.”

When I first met my therapist and later good friend, Elizabeth, in 1990, I was having a lot of suicidal thoughts. She encouraged me to talk about them. There was no hush hush with Elizabeth. She was blunt to the point of embarrassment at times. “come on, Michael, let’s talk about your suicide wish,” she would say, trying to edge me on so I would not hold things inside. “Let me tell you about mine. I was going to get dog drunk, stuff a sock in the exhaust pipe of my car and turn on the motor and let the carbon monoxide do me in.” That was how I was going to do it. Know what kept me from it? I had no garage. I feared I might take in just enough to go unconscious for awhile, fry a bunch of brain cells then wind up a vegetable on a crazy psych ward. Having no garage is what saved my life. Well, not really,” she went on, “at a deeper level I really didn’t want to die, I just wanted the hurt and pain to go away and those God awful deep dark depressions which you feel are going to eat you alive and spit your remains into the abyss.”

I sat mesmerized, listening to her story. I had never known anyone else to be as, depressed let alone, more, depressed than I was. “Most people don’t really want to end their lives,” Elizabeth continued, “they just want relief from the hurt and pain. Some see no other way out than drinking, gluttony, sleeping 14 hours a day, been there done that one, or becoming a sex, gambling, or shop-a-holic, been there done a couple of those too. I have certainly paid my respects to the porcelain goddess. I’d counsel clients all day. Lots of therapists have major issues and problems on the home front. Hell, I became a therapist, so I could acquire some tools to help myself.

Then Elizabeth would move a little closer and speak softly, “you know, Michael, there is a lot of power in rage and depression. They are great teachers. You have to learn to do battle with them and talk to them. Find out what they are about, how they tick and click and what they want from you. Just listening to the parts of yourself that hate life and don’t want to live is a tremendous step towards healing. Most people do the opposite and try to repress and shove the negative feelings away. It never works. Skeletons don’t belong in the closet. When left alone and unattended, they find ways to clamor, and shake and rattle until they get your attention. And your attention they will get one way or another. Take it from one who’s been there. I know what I am talking about.”

After going on awhile Elizabeth would tell me it was my turn to talk and she would listen and prod me along. When it got real emotional and tough, she helped me through it. I attracted Elizabeth in my life because I really did not want to commit suicide. When one wants to live one can always find a reason, just as when we truly want help we can attract it. Another time during another dark period when I wanted to end it all, I called my friend Janet. At one point I said, “I can’t die, I have never gotten through all the “Star Wars” movies or finished editing that book How to Develop your Intuition that I wrote.” If seeing a movie, editing a book, visiting a relative or even becoming a hermit or a drunk for awhile are what it takes to get through such hard times, then I say “may the force be with us.”

I have learned the hard way that Depression and Despair are demanding, difficult but wonderful teachers; ergo the reason for capitalizing them. Depression is one way that our soul is endeavoring to reach out and help us. We become depressed when our life is out of balance and we are not ‘doing’ what we are supposed to be doing. We have gotten off track and lost our way.

Our soul and our guides can help get us back on track but too often we shut the door and don’t listen to our soul or our guides. Depression is one result from such shutting out. We may be avoiding working out our karma and getting on with our lives. We may be holding onto unhealthy dysfunctional relationships that are not serving us. We often resist and fight what we know our heart and soul wants for us. But like the saying goes what we resist persists and Ole man or lady Depression will show up when we continually deny or neglect to carry out our destiny and work to fulfill and actualize our hopes and dreams. Depression and despair are blocked unharnessed energies that need to stir and move. They contain raw reservoirs of power which can move us forward in a positive direction They can also turn on and destroy us if we do not find out what they have to say and teach us. They intensity if we refuse to make necessary adjustments in our beliefs and thinking to bring about needed changes in our lives.

I have learned that our struggles do not always originate from this current lifetime we are living. I have had more than one psychic tell me that my last lifetime was as a struggling model and Impressionist painter in Paris, France. What I found most interesting upon hearing this is that several things relevant to me in this lifetime to validate the psychics’ reading. I never understood the meaning of this strange behavior until the psychics solved the mystery for me. The psychics knew nothing about me and I gave them no information of any kind.

I also carried a tremendous amount of anger towards men for much of this lifetime. I know that some of it originates from my father being so abusive. But I was to learn that my struggles with men did not originate in this lifetime. This made me more determined to get to the root of my anger with men in this lifetime so that I could heal and move on. I have learned in my metaphysical studies that unresolved pain, hurt and karma will definitely bring us back to work the karma out in a future lifetime.

The mystery would be solved a few years later when I went to see a renowned astrologer and psychic at Camp Chesterfield Spiritualist Camp, near Indianapolis, Indiana. I had given her my birth information on the telephone and she did the astrological calculations for my natal birth chart as well as my karmic chart. One of her specialties was karma astrology. Needless to say I was very eager and excited about the reading. One of the first things that she asked me was if I spoke French. I told her that I not only spoke French but I was a French teacher. She smiled and continued.

“I had the feeling that you just might speak French. You are a very sensitive man who is endowed with a very fertile and creative imagination and a good mind as well. The first lifetime that showed up for you was a female lifetime as a model and Impressionist painter in Paris, France. As a matter of fact that was your very last lifetime.”

“No wonder I was so drawn to and learned French so fast.”

“That is true and since you are very in touch with your subconscious mind you should still be an artist at heart. Do you paint or write?”

“I love to write. I’ve written many poems and a few stories but I’ve never taken it very far.”

“Well you are going to. You are destined to write books, Michael. I am seeing spiritual, metaphysical, and self-help books that will help a lot of people. I can see you writing some novels as well.”

“I do get a lot of ideas for stories that just pop into my head. I have to admit that I’m not very disciplined. Being a full time graduate student at the university takes a lot out of me and I am also attending a spiritual center where I am learning psychic development and I take a lot of other classes, attend seminars and such.”

“That is all fine but you are destined to be a writer, Michael. Let me tell you why. Your last life time was no piece of cake or day at the park as the saying goes. You possessed talent and you desperately loved to paint but you were not respected by the Impressionist painters of the time. That was a time when most men were rather chauvinistic. You had a very hard way to go. You almost starved to death and you almost froze to death at one point. There was a man who loved you very much. He wanted to marry you but you were not interested in marriage. You did incur some karma with him and may have met him in this lifetime.”

He became very worried and concerned as France became more unstable and he wanted you to leave with him and go to safety. You told him there was nothing to worry or fret over but the truth was you did not want to leave the lavish courtly life to which you had become accustomed to living. You died at the guillotine and he died of a broken heart. What a sad life!”

“That is very interesting because I cannot stand to have anything near my neck nor do I like neckties.”

“And you knew him here,” she said, pointing to the karmic astrology chart wheel she had drawn up. “This was a lifetime in India. You were a monk safe in a monastery while he, your mother and a sister died of starvation from a famine. He came to you and begged you for food but all you could talk about was your high meditations and the spiritual life. Your lesson was to balance the material and spiritual life and that will be a lesson for this lifetime as well.”

“That’s interesting that you say this. I recall from the first time Chris came to visit my apartment he asked me what I had to eat. He always liked me to feed him and he just expected it. I remember thinking a few times I didn’t take him to raise.”

“Maybe you did,” the psychic said. “Now back to your life as the French painter. You wound up very disillusioned and you gave up painting and you pretty much hated men. You have to bond with your art in this lifetime and make whatever sacrifices it takes to become successful.”

“I didn’t do it then so I have to do it now kind of thing. Is that what you are saying.”

“Yes, and it won’t be easy. But it is one of your primary soul karmic lessons for this lifetime. Your karmic ascendant in the karmic chart shows what you absolutely have to learn in this lifetime. Yours is in Capricorn and you have to learn responsibility in all walks of life. Your tendency is to run out whether mentally, emotionally or physically when things get tough. You cannot do that in this lifetime.”

“I can relate to that.”

The psychic discussed a few other lifetimes and what I learned or didn’t learn and then the session ended. I later also had three other psychics (from different parts of the country) tell me I was killed at the guillotine in the French Revolution.

Learning I had been a struggling artist was very beneficial to me, but the psychic sure hit the nail on the head when she said it would not be easy to bond with my art in this lifetime. Knowledge that we did not complete a karmic agreement reminds us of what we have yet to do and accomplish but it makes it no less easy. I have started and stopped my writing so many times over the years I have lost count. I’d begin a novel or project and dive in wholeheartedly and write for hours or even days at a time. Then I’d be besieged by melancholy and sadness and I’d just quit. Like out of sight, out of mind, it was as though I had not written anything. I usually could not remember most of what I had written nor did I care to when I was in the pit of depression.

Currently at the age of 52 I am finally making some strides with my writing that the psychic predicted over twenty years ago that I would do. The saying goes it’s better later than never. I am sure there is some truth to that and I now I am a psychic who counsels people. In my psychic work I am constantly giving similar advice and past life readings have become a big part of my work. Still it does not take away a lot of the emotional suffering that we humans seem to like to put ourselves through. Why couldn’t I have accepted the past life reading from the psychic and just get on with my writing and my life? It’s not that simple for most of us. Old hurts, wounds and fears do not usually die or go away over night. At least I have found that to be the case with myself and many of my clients. Healing can be a lifetime process. I am grateful for the progress and the healing that I have undergone but I am not totally healed. I may never be.

I am still prone to depression and melancholy at times although I tend to deal with it better than I used to. I do have a much better understanding of depression than I used to and this helps me to deal with it and to help my clients struggling with it. Sometimes depression can become chronic (as it has with me many times over the years) to the point that we can feel or become immobilized and this can lead to thoughts or fantasies of suicide. This is not our soul trying to be mean or cruel to us. It wants to help us and show us what we are here on this earth to do, and believe me we are all on the earth for reasons that were planned before we were even born.

I have read that for every soul that incarnates and is born that there are at least (sometimes more) ten more souls waiting to be born. There are more souls wanting to be born to work off accumulated karma than there are bodies available for them to reincarnate into. We don’t usually have recall of those pre-planned meetings and sessions with our counselors where we mapped out what we want to accomplish in a particular incarnation. But this does not mean that our soul and our guides do not possess this knowledge. Sometimes a regression with a qualified hypnotherapist or past life regressionist can offer help. The subconscious mind is usually at liberty to offer some insight as to what the person chose to work on in the current incarnation. It can also give some insight to help explain certain phobias, challenges, fears, attractions, talents, and abilities that people possess. Our soul and subconscious mind know far more than the conscious person does at any given point. Sometimes it takes enough depression, despair and failure to cause us to surrender and reach out to God, a higher power, angels and guides. When this happens we are on our way to recovery and healing. For that reason depression and despair do serve their purpose.

When we speak from the soul, the doors to miracles begin to open. Sometimes we need to let out what I like to call “a big soul cry” so that God and our angels indeed do hear us. I let out one of those soul cries about a week before I met Elizabeth. I was so desperate that I told God I was even willing to jump off the Golden Gate Bridge if he would only give me a sign that was the right thing to do to escape all my pain. I added that I would listen to no voices of paranoia, self defeat or malevolent spirits. Those and all the other negative voices inside me would have to shut up. This would have to come from the head honcho himself. I begged God to bring somebody to help me. I just could not keep carrying the heavy load all by myself. I did not trust anybody. I was lonely. Life basically sucked.

There were many nights during that time that the old voices would whisper things in my mind like, “Come on now, just end it all. Take leave from this world. It will be nicer on the other side. The world won’t miss one little measly human being.” I might have been very depressed and vulnerable, but I am also strong willed. Part of me knew I did not really want to do myself in and I knew that suicide was not the answer. Still, during such times, many of us have contemplated ending our lives. The pain is just so unbearable at times that we see no other options. Now I tell others to let out a soul cry so that help is on the way.

It is partly my metaphysical and spiritual beliefs that helped me get through those dark times. I have learned in my studies and explorations that the soul is evolving its way back to Creator source or “God” as some refer to the divine. We willingly choose to undergo many experiences as part of our growth and evolution. We have lifetimes where we are pawns of the darkness and in other lifetimes we are servants of the light. Often we will exemplify qualities of the darkness and the light, or positive and negative traits and qualities. I learned that the law of cause and effect, or karma, is one of the universal laws ever in operation and each of us are subject to face up and work out accumulated karmic debts that we have incurred with various souls who we encounter. When the karmic debts are paid we evolve and our soul lights brighten and we move closer to our source. Most people spend many lifetimes on the earth as a part of working out their karma, which can be positive as well as negative.

Some souls have lifetimes on other planets, and worlds in other solar systems, universes, and dimensions. Learning such things gave me a sense of personal responsibility. I could not play ‘poor me victim’ as I did for years in my younger days. This knowledge did not make the ‘work’ or paying off the karma any easier, but it did help me to learn that there are no victims. We create it all! Yes, I know this can be hard to swallow but at some point each soul does come to this realization. My regressions and past life readings gave me insight about my past lives where I had abused free will and used my personal magnetism and power to manipulate and get what I wanted from others. In this lifetime I had to face several powerful people who manipulated and used me. I learned that it is not safe to die. There is no where to go like Sartre says in the play “No Exit.” Or as the reputed seer Edgar Cayce would say ‘it always comes back to self meeting self. Each karmic debt must be paid. There are no exceptions and what is not paid in one lifetime must be paid up in another one. So we might as well pay up no matter how much work, time and energy is involved.

I knew that I did not want to have to come back in a future lifetime and work off the mistakes I did not correct in this lifetime. As difficult and heavy my emotional burdens were I put out the thought and plea to my guides and the universe for some help. About a week after my soul cry Elizabeth came in the jewelry store where I was working. We struck up a conversation since there were no other customers at the moment. At one point she looked at me and said, “can I be blunt with you?”

“Sure,” I said, “intrigued, “lay it on me.”

“You laugh and play the clown a lot, Michael, but I think you are depressed a lot. I have observed you many times in here and I can tell a lot about people from watching them.”

As she went on I let down my guard and confessed that she was right. I was good at playing the clown and few people knew the real me. I didn’t even know the real me. Although I laughed and joked a lot I was really very lonely and unhappy. She then went on to say that she was a lot like me. We talked for an hour. A few days later she called and invited me to lunch. After that we talked on the phone and began doing other things together. Soon thereafter, we began “our graveyard” sessions as I call them. We would walk in the Spring Grove cemetery/park and have our sessions. I told Elizabeth about my soul cry to God the week before I met her. She said she had not been to the store in a few weeks because she always wound up spending lots of money on gifts for her friends. That was one of her addictions, she admitted.

Her inner voice told her to go to the store that particular day when we met. I was still amazed at how magical it all was. When we truly surrender, then our soul can intervene and bring us help that we need. Too many times we let our fears and doubts keep the magic from happening. I could have gone on about not having any money to pay a therapist as many people do. But part of my nature has always been that of the trusting child who believes in magic and miracles. I was truly ready to get back to work on me again, and I was open to help from anybody. My guides knew that and I believe they sent Elizabeth to me. She never charged me for a single session because she said I was a good friend and counselor to her as well.

Although she moved away after a couple of years, and I think of her often and sometimes miss her, I know that she stayed as long as she needed to stay in the Cincinnati area. She had said that my friendship, encouragement and support helped her end her unhappy 26 year old marriage. I like to think that I did help her. Now she is gone but people do enter and exit our lives all the time. May we cherish, appreciate and enjoy them while they are with us and learn all we can from the relationship and bless them when they move on.

Elizabeth was a big gift in my life, a reward I felt for the inner work I had been doing. The inner work is important and there is much we have to do alone, but there is also a time when we need help from others too. I am totally convinced we can attract that help when we need it if we do not place limitations and restrictions on who is meant to be our mentors and helpers. Help can come in any way, shape or form. We will feel it in our guts if someone is good for us or if they are not. I remember telling Elizabeth one day that therapy sucked. She snickered and said that she agreed, but that unhappiness and misery sucked more. I have said it before and I say it again. Therapy works if we work with it. This takes time, effort, and beaucoup de patience as the French say.

The inner work on self continued, but I was reaching out to others more. I befriended a couple of other psychologists whose approaches were entirely different from those of Elizabeth. But, hey, variety is the spice of life. I learned a lot from them. I also met a few social workers who helped me too. I have always had a tendency to attract such people. I think it is because I have so much respect for people in the helping professions. My dream at age 14 was to become a psychiatrist and to fix my mother. Then I changed my mind and decided to become a social worker then a minister. I finally realized that we cannot fix anybody; that fixing ourselves is a big enough task, and I wound up majoring in French. But my love for Psychology will always be there and those books I collected so long ago are some of my greatest friends. I still read them and get a lot of help when I do. We change and grow every day. There is always something different to get out of a book, a new, a broader or more enlightening perspective to acquire, another idea to illuminate us in some way it did not before.

It took awhile for me to accept that rage, despair and depression are our teachers and possess many gifts, but as I worked more with Elizabeth, it began to make more sense. “The more anger and hurt you can feel, the more room there is for love and joy,” she’d insist. “You just have to get to the pain and rage before you get to the love. You got to go down before you go up!” And that anger and rage can originate from more than the present lifetime we are currently, I learned. When we visited,” she often laughed and said, “Is the elevator going up or down today?”

As I became more sensitive to my own wounded inner child and began listening to my fears, hurts, and insecurities along with my hopes and dreams and the things that excited him about life, I noticed that my self centeredness diminished more and more. “Egotists are really insecure children in adult bodies,” Elizabeth said one day. “They are so emotionally wounded and hurt that the only way they think they can survive and get anywhere is to put themselves first at the expense of others’ feelings, and needs. When they hurt others they are also hurting themselves. And that is a real pity and shame.”

I encourage all who are living miserable unhappy lives to begin to explore the metaphysical and spiritual realms. The exploration cannot work off your karma but it can give you knowledge which is power. That alone will make the working out of karma more understandable and in some ways less difficult. For at this point of our learning we have come to release the victiom or ‘poor me’ mode of thinking and living and begin to take personal responsibility for our life, and our past lives. This will help bring positive change and lead us to a happier more fulfilled life.

Body Weight and Spiritual Work

I have had a battle with my weight since I was 21 years of age and went on the birth pill on the advice of my doctor, whether I should have taken the advice or not has always been a question mark within me. I went from a size 12 – 14 up to a size 24 in three months and basically stayed that way all of my life. I did lose weight a couple of times, and kept it off for a while. My lowest size was twenty years ago when I got down to a size 12 again and kept it off for 6 weeks!

I had gone through a difficult time with my marriage and had separated for 6 weeks. I had lost weight all year, and decided to go back to my then ex. He told me I was too thin, and I in my effort to be what HE wanted, began eating again a lot of the things I had avoided, which were high in carbs. Within a few months, I was back to a size 24 again. I did not realize then the reason for my weight was the work I was to do. Because for me, to be the Medium/channel I am, it needs for me to carry weight, not so much fat, but water.

I read recently that Oprah Winfrey is back up to 200 pounds again; and that in a letter to the public, she said how ashamed she feels knowing what she knows, having the awareness she does about nutrition. However, I remembered Pavarotti losing weight and gaining it, and losing and gaining it in the last years of his life. I noticed when he lost weight, his voice did not carry as much power. Oprah Winfrey does not realize it, but she is a channel for spirit. They use her, just like they use me, to bring the words of spirit to the world.

With Oprah, it is her show “Oprah” which over the last 20+ years has brought the spiritual/metaphysical subjects to the world. For me, it is the Maitreya web site and then of course, this web site as well as all the teaching/readings that I do. Like Oprah I have despaired of my weight over the years, but unlike Oprah and some of my friends, I have not become obsessed with it. Yes I have tried a couple of times to lose weight, but it has not been constant.

What is the purpose of this writing? It is to let the world know, if you work for spirit, there is a distinct possibility you will put weight on, and also have a problem taking it off. Also, it is not so much fat, as water, and that water is what spirit use as energy to do their work through us on the earth plane. My husband Alan put on 25 pounds within a year of being with me in the beginning. He did not eat any more either, he just put the extra weight on.

So what if you are thin, does this mean you cannot be a Medium/channel? No it does not. It does mean though that you will not have the staying power in doing the work. In my case, I can work and work and work, Alan says I am like the Ever Ready bunny, which is a type of battery in the USA which they guarantee will run longer than the others. I rarely get tired. My friend in NZ however who is thin, is a brilliant astrologer and channel, but she can only do about 15 readings a week if that, and runs out of energy very quickly.

People love my energy, just as they did Pavarotti’s, and Oprah’s. I have never been able to understand it, but recently at a concert Alan and I attended, the woman who sat next to me made comment on my energy and how she could nestle up to me. How warm I was. I know I could not be like that without the body weight. It is that “warmth” which draws people into my energy like flies to a sticky paper.

Oprah should not be ashamed of her weight, I used to be, but am no longer. Would I like to be a size 14/16, you bet, but I know it is not possible while I work for spirit. I do not advocate that you all go out there and eat to your heart’s content. I honestly do not eat a lot of things which are considered the fat person’s comfort such as chocolate, candy, cakes, cookies. I do not exercise a lot and that could be the problem, but after a week of working for spirit, I rarely have the energy to do that kind of thing, and if I did, of course it would affect the weight!

A medical doctor, someone who attends our center and is very interested in the metaphysical, told me the other day she liked me the way I was, and I seemed very healthy (she see’s and senses people’s energy) I came to the realization I loved myself too. If I lose weight, good and well, if not, too bad. At least I will know spirit can use my body for their work on the earth plane, it is so important, that work.

If you are carrying weight, do you find that people come up to you and tell you all of their problems? Do you take on people’s pain, depression and emotional issues? Do you find yourself starving after doing any kind of work where you help others? If you answered yes to these questions, you can bet you are working for spirit. Many people do, and do not even know it.

I was told when I was 14 years of age, our health was caused by the state of our mind. If we are happy inside, our body will be happy. I was thinking today of the number of really large people who have lived to long ripe ages, I personally can name at least 10. So MY new year resolution is to be happy, and let my body take care of itself. Of course my Self will not be happy, but then I am not catering to my Self, but to my Higher Self these days. – Go spirit!!

Approaching Metaphysics Part 1

Before one approaches seriously the study of metaphysics, magick, the occult, or mysticism, it is appropriate that one prepares oneself on all levels: mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. It is of vital importance that the student be psychologically prepared for the reception of Cosmic truths; for without adequate preparation, without the required purity, the right attitude and the right motive, one simply deludes or sidetracks oneself from all that which is essential in occult study to those phenomena and teachings that are unessential, delusive, and misleading; to phenomena that simply strengthen one’s hold in a world of illusion, glamour, pride and ego; aside from this, should one attempt occult work without due preparation one exposes oneself to certain dangers which are far-reaching. Without adequate preparation the student would abuse and misuse occult, spiritual teachings and powers.

The karmic consequences of this abuse may stall or cause stagnation in one’s spiritual evolution for countless incarnations. Basically, religion without the theological dogmas, is an appropriate basis for the study of metaphysics. Students of metaphysics are advised to deepen their religious activities by engaging in personal study of their scriptures or holy book without relying on the usual channels or interpreters for clarification. This is to preserve one’s bicameral mind from external influence and dependency on “authority figures” that may be damaging to the psyche in the long run.

Purity, sincerity, humility, and a selfless motive which seeks to serve one’s fellow men are qualities to possess or develop when requesting from, or studying the teachings of a spiritual/ metaphysical teacher, or even when embarking on our own by studying books on the occult. These qualities or virtues are our safeguard. They protect us from negative forces which affect our mental and emotional stability.

One of the keys to preparation is to eliminate the false ego from our thinking and centeredness. Think from the Christ level. Think the thoughts of Jesus, Muhammad-the Prophet, Krishna, Lao Tze, or Buddha. What do you think these avatars and prophets of God think constantly of? They think of God, Truth, Beauty, and Goodness. Therefore we advise each student to do likewise. Thinking abstract thoughts, divine thoughts, spiritual thoughts, and holy thoughts raises the vibrations of the physical, etheric, astral and mental bodies. This facilitates metaphysical and spiritual development so needed by the human race. It improves the quality of humanity.

One of the problems which poses as an obstacle to occult and metaphysical study is that of the crystallized mind. As a preparation, the first step that has to be undertaken by the student of metaphysics and the occult is to temporary put away all previous concepts and beliefs regarding them. There are many false beliefs and superstition concerning the occult perpetuated by ignorant individuals, by psychics of a low caliber, by secular education, and even by religion, that we have to cast all of those beliefs aside and prepare our minds to really think and use our reason and intuition. Even if we had learnt metaphysics or branches of it previously from genuine teachers, it is still required of us to shelve them aside when we begin our apprenticeship under a new tutor.

Our minds should be open and receptive to the teachings of the higher worlds, but if our minds are closed and crystallized, we fail to register the truths concealed in occult and metaphysical teachings regarding the laws of the cosmos, the higher worlds, the principles of mind and one’s psychic nature. If the teachings of any metaphysical system or teacher (including this writer) contradict your personal notions and feelings and you have trouble accepting them, simply shelve them aside for the time being and consider them again at a later date when you have acquired more experiences and knowledge. Realize, however, that most of the time opinions and beliefs do not reflect Truth. We teach what we personally know or what others personally know. We do not proselytize or impose our words upon others against their will. We are happy to give to others the teachings of the Spiritual Masters should they be receptive and just as happy not to give should they be non-receptive. We can lead a horse to a drinking trough but we are unable to make it drink.

Granted, that information concerning the occult the tyro or neophyte often has to regard as hypothesis, or working theories, but in time the student is given methods for investigating and proving to himself the verities of metaphysical truths and the realities of the higher worlds.

We seek knowledge, wisdom, and experience–not mere beliefs. For the student of Nature’s mysteries, beliefs will not do. Beliefs are blatant expressions of one’s ignorance, for if one knows, why is there a need for beliefs? If one should say that one believes in the existence of something, one implies in that statement that one does not really know if that something exists. Belief and knowledge are poles apart.

In spiritual and occult training one invokes intense energies, powers and forces emanating from the spiritual worlds. These energies flow into the whole microcosm even down to the physical level. Should the physical body and its force-field vibrate at a very low level because of the presence of impurities, toxins, and negative forces, the nervous and energy systems of the physical and etheric bodies would explode and rupture during the influx of those higher energies. This is one reason why one embarks upon the Path of Purification prior to engaging in advance occult work.

The Master’s Advice

In days gone by, when a student approached a spiritual or occult master for instructions, the master would say “empty your cup.” The master illustrates the purpose of this by pouring fresh tea into a cup already filled to the brim with the liquid. The tea would naturally overflow. “Likewise,” the master would say, “will the teachings I fill your mind be rejected by all of your previous thoughts and false beliefs. Therefore, empty your cup.” Which means, in other words, “empty your mind of previous ideas and conceptions.” Most people are disinclined to accepting new ideas. They dislike change, and yet we must change towards a positive direction if we are to progress. There is a senseless fear and laziness in most people in operating their brain faculties such as using their mind to reason. Our minds must be open and flexible, yet putting all new ideas to the test where possible before accepting them. We must strive to see the logic and rationality in concepts, if any, that are new to us. In other words, we must think! It would not hurt to be critical in a positive and constructive sense of novel ideas or even religious ideas if we believe that our criticism is valid. Although the mind is limited, it has its purpose and we should not shirk from using it.

It is an important requirement for the occult student not to form any false ideas concerning himself and lower his self-esteem. He should not limit his mind and divine expression by saying “I can’t do this,” “I can’t do that.” One never knows what one can do until one tries. This applies to all branches of learning and study. Often we hear people say “nobody’s perfect,” and they use this as an excuse not to improve their morality, their character, their minds or even their social standing. If one approaches the study of metaphysics and the occult in this manner, one is bound to fail. Metaphysics is hard work, and those who are not interested in work should leave metaphysics alone. Metaphysical truths awaken a person from self-complacency and the slumber of mortal errors. The student of metaphysics should be prepared for this and not rebel when it occurs. When you come to the point where you can think of nothing but metaphysics in your everyday activities, you shall succeed in being a metaphysician. Metaphysics has to be incorporated into one’s life 24 hours a day.

Studying the occult and metaphysics requires great perseverance, endurance, patience, and fortitude. It even requires a certain degree of intelligence. Note that we do not say education or intellect, for the educated mind and intellect at times can be more of a hindrance than an asset. Unless our mind is receptive and open to modify previous findings or concepts expounded by science or religion which from the point of view of metaphysics are erroneous, one would simply fail in metaphysical study and the probing of Nature’s higher laws. The intellect, as the result of education is simply the building blocks that we accumulate, whereas intelligence is the conscious directive power that builds an edifice out of those blocks. Being educated implies gathering data and information that may or may not be true or even relevant to one’s life. We should seek the sort of knowledge that is applicable to our everyday lives with its countless challenges and problems. Overcoming human problems is mastership. Intelligence is a necessary attribute to comprehending metaphysical principles. You need not be concerned of any lack of intelligence, however, for metaphysical practices itself raises one’s I.Q., E.Q., and S.Q.

Some occultists, metaphysicians, and mystics have declared that it is much easier acquiring an academic degree than getting fruitful results from occult study. This is indeed true, for occult study requires unfolding the inner senses to register higher vibrations and the various phenomena of the higher dimensions, and this takes much time and energy for practice and training. The purpose of metaphysical study is to make each and every one torchbearers of Truth. Work for Truth, live in Truth, promote Truth and it is guaranteed that you will evolve into God’s Light. However, seek no reward.

Metaphysical development requires time, patience, perseverance and great concentration–the type of concentration not normally possessed by the average person. This training of psychic and metaphysical faculties may take a whole life time for its perfect functioning and control. We should not be daunted by this, however. The Master Jesus said, “In patience possess ye your soul,” and this each student of metaphysics must be conscientious of. The student must have patience and possess his or her soul and not allow the Dark forces to possess it. In metaphysics we learn to direct our lower self, if we do not do this, negative beings will.

It is expedient that the student remove religious and any form of prejudice from his mind and heart. At times teachers of metaphysics may refer to the text of one religion in preference to another to illustrate or substantiate certain metaphysical concepts. This they do, not because of their personal background and not because of any animosity toward the other religions, but because of convenience sake. We know that the essence of all religions is Truth itself. Metaphysicians, therefore, teach and refer to the Truth in all religions whenever possible. This brings up another subject to mind: fanaticism. Fanaticism is not to be tolerated, not in metaphysics, not in religion, not in any human endeavor whatsoever. Fanaticism simply indicates a blind belief in principles and opinions, most of which may be dubious as to their validity. Fanaticism is separatistic, narrow-minded and destructive, and should be avoided. It breaks up unity by creating divisions and schisms. It is the very antithesis of the spiritual precept: “unity in diversity.” The motto of the Dark forces will always be “divide and conquer.”

Man is a microcosm of the macrocosm. In religious terms, man is a reflection of God, for he/she was made in God’s image. Since God is perfect, man likewise, in a spiritual sense, is perfect. Man carries the seeds of perfection within him. He only needs to unfold this divine seed of perfection lying dormant within him. When this is done all things become possible to man. In order to nurture these divine seeds, one must overcome inertia and work with the evolutionary forces of Nature.

The Motive of Study

One of the first few things that a student of metaphysic has to do is to introspect and analyze as to the motive for approaching metaphysical study. Why does one want to study metaphysics, its branches, and its various arts such as magick, mysticism, esotericism, psychometry, dowsing, or telepathy? For what reason? For what motive? Is it simply to gain advantage over another, for power over others? Or is it simply to acquire name and fame or the riches that it will produce? Approaching metaphysics with such motives would retard one’s spiritual growth and is not condoned by any spiritual teacher of worth. A true and noble motive would be to serve God and humanity in spiritualizing this physical world, in manifesting Heaven on Earth, where Truth, Justice, Righteousness, Love, Peace and Goodwill between men prevails. Should your motive be negative, you are advised to transform it now. Do not deceive yourself as to your motive.

Another thing that we must not do, is to steal the secrets of heaven or gain entry into it by force, meaning that we should not force our occult growth by engaging in dubious exercises obtained through sources with no real integrity or authority to transmitting them and hoping for an instant development with their application. Should occult abilities be “instantly” procured, it would not be permanent and would result in adverse effects in most cases. We all know the low quality of plants cultivated in greenhouses as compared to the cultivation done underneath Nature’s roof. It is the same with metaphysical growth. Heaven is not willing to release her secrets to the profane, and if by chance any of us acquire her secrets and apply them without the proper motive and purity, we unknowingly curse ourselves. The scriptures say that God is not mocked. This is a symbolic way of saying that the Law of Karma is operative and no one is able to avoid its influence.

The student should be aware that there are false Gurus in the metaphysical field. Every student should be wary and cautious in accepting what they have to teach, for though what they teach be sweet to the mouth, their effects may be bitter to the stomach. These Gurus have no sense of responsibility, and they control and manipulate the minds of their followers for their own nefarious reasons. They create a morbid dependency on the part of the student.

Without the adequate and correct preparation through the Path of Purification, although one may unfold in a psychic manner, if accepted and trained by a “Guru,” one would limit one’s psychic development and stagnate in one’s spiritual evolution. The higher occult and mystical abilities requires that one be spiritually developed, and this cannot be attained without the necessary purification of the microcosm.

Spiritual Masters of the occult and metaphysics are wary and watchful of students with impure motives. It is not unusual for Spiritual Masters to reject applicants for study or to put them through certain tests, or to give them some advise and told to return at a later date, perhaps a week, or a year later. Just because a student is anxious to study the occult does not imply that he is ready for it or that he should be accepted by a Spiritual Master or Adept. Acceptance by a Spiritual Master and the initiations that he has to offer requires sincerity of motive and more besides. The false Guru may perhaps accept such a student for personal reasons–for fame, name, glory or wealth. The true Guru, however, never consider these things as criteria for accepting students, although he may work in strange ways that sometimes seem amoral or irrational in order to test candidates. An occult axiom states that, “When the student is ready, the master appears.” The advise here is to make oneself ready through proper preparation and not sit and wait and twiddle one’s thumbs. The master in this axiom may refer to a spiritual being, one’s personal spiritual guide or guardian, or even to a metaphysical school.

It should be known that the metaphysical path is a strenuous one requiring every minute of the day. One does not engage in metaphysics at certain spare moments available. One must make time for the study and practice of metaphysics. Reduce unnecessary socializing and reduce watching TV and movies to a bare minimum; preferable not at all wasting time on them. This may result in some conflict between your friends and relatives as you settle-in to your new metaphysical routine, but consider this: what is more important, their egoistic and personal gratification and demands or your study of Truth with its eternal worth and its spiritual application in the affairs of men? It is up to you to decide; however, if results are not forthcoming from your practice because of your lack of application, you have no one to blame but yourself. One piece of advice: you may drop-out from metaphysical study but never drop-out from life, for it may be that your real metaphysical teacher and lesson is life itself. Accept whatever life brings and learn from it; otherwise, seek to change it using your God-given creative powers.

The Contemplation of Life and Death

Perhaps one of the things that a novice of metaphysics is told to do at the very outset by a true metaphysical or spiritual teacher is to contemplate the meaning of death and the opportunity that life offers. This dual theme is a healthy, sane, and balanced contemplation that when analyzed individually tends to produce an unhealthy pessimistic or overly hopeful attitude. How does one begin this contemplation? By reflecting on the following: first of all realize that we are all heading toward physical death, This might seem discouraging nevertheless is a true statement that cannot be contradicted. With every second, with every breath that we take we approach closer to our grave. Nature guarantees us nothing in life but our coming demise. This is her promise. We do not know when we will leave the physical body permanently. It may be the next hour, today or tomorrow, but leave it we shall. From these musings questions would arise: “What then is the meaning of life?” What is the purpose of life?” Shall we say as the materialists would say, “let us eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die”? What sort of a philosophy is that when our query remains unanswered? It would be preferable to say “let us study the purpose and meaning of life for we know not when we will pass away and God’s purpose for us here may not be carried-out if we spend our time on frivolous matters.”

Contemplating further, we will realize one major thing, and that life here is an opportunity. Opportunity for what? An opportunity to grow, to become, and to be. Heraclitus, the philosopher of ancient Greece said that everything is becoming. This is the Law of Change. From our metaphysical point of view, we understand that he was referring to the Law of Evolution.

Understanding The Reality Of What We Are – Psychic Medium Or Spiritual Metaphysics

Speaking of crazy coincidences or psychic medium or psychic link, perhaps spiritual metaphysics, if you will, I’ll share a bit about my experiences of spiritual connection when I needed it the most.

Everyday miracles, we can say. Yes?

To those of us who are aware of spiritual metaphysics we are of the One Mind, understood as an endless arch of golden light with no boundaries or conflict. Some say Light of the divine sustained by an endless Ray of love that is God. This is What we are.

It is our inner connectedness within the One Mind that gives us our consciousness and a life perhaps where crazy coincidences occur.

The process of spiritual connection, or called by some as a “psychic medium” or “psychic link,” can be likened to a single seed sowed and to become a radiant and glorious field of flowers.

A Course in Miracles states, “Reality needs no cooperation from you to be itself. Your awareness of it needs your help, because it is your choice.”

Spiritual metaphysics

While in prison for eight long years I have received helpful and honest words from others I have never met before from all over the world, but no one has indicated how they received my situation, address, and name.

I believe she lives in Colorado, as she briefly described the beauty of the Rocky Mountains, how she’s living life to the fullest, and she wrote that she is “with me in spirit.”

Somehow her postcard itself was my thrill. I use it as a book marker to this day in my copy of A Course in Miracles.

How did I suddenly become her friend? I can’t answer that.

A postcard showed up from a retired literary agent, Barb, typed on an old-fashioned typewriter with a worn key. This, she said, was her style when writing to friends.

She added that her business connections had dwindled since her retirement, but she did lead me to a resource directory that would possibly help me obtain a publisher for my work. She warned me of the uphill climb I was facing and encouraged me to continue.

It seemed to be a mystery and I never had a clue otherwise how some had gotten in touch with me, other than by word of mouth.

Understanding your own inner world

Some had given me a source, but they can’t tell me how their source was able to pass along my contact information.

Once enrolled in, my guess is that she was somehow connected to a writing correspondence course I. Odd was that I only heard from her once, with no return address on the postcard, and surprisingly while I was writing and studying about the metaphysics of A Course in Miracles.

Psychic medium

Another letter showed up from a romance novelist named Susan, urging me to keep my pen in hand, along with other inspiring words. She added that I should not “wait for the ink to dry.” I took this as encouragement to keep moving forward, never stopping.

This new skill adds something a bit ethereal to my listening pleasure. When I ‘d listen to classical music that soothes me, there were many late nights or wee early morning hours.

For this new understanding of each instrument in the orchestra, I have Joel to thank for this spiritual connection.

All she could tell me further was that she had run into an old friend of mine while out to lunch on a Sunday afternoon. I never found out who it was.

Joel, a man who plays the cello in a symphony orchestra, had written me several letters, giving me insight on how to pick out the cello amongst all the instruments during a performance. Now, when I listen to the all-night classical music station on my radio, I can easily bring to mind the cello line.

Crazy coincidences

The most exciting letters I’ve received were from a woman in Croatia, her name is Nakita, who offered me tremendous inspiration. Once met while he was visiting her country on a concert tour, she told me of a man from the United States she. He played and sang guitar professionally.

Later during the course of our correspondence, Joel did confess that he had been given my contact information by his church in New York City– though I don’t know how it got there, and I don’t know anyone in New York.

He and his wife live in Manhattan but go to church on Staten Island. Just a coincidence?

Spiritual connection

During their discussions Nakita discovered his passion for the principles and lessons contained in A Course in Miracles. Her encouragement for me to keep the faith and all that “stuff” has proven to be successful.

She went on to tell me that she had heard him perform at an area concert for world peace, and that he was on a similar spiritual path as myself. Through friends of hers, she was able to meet this musician and spend some quality time together.

Spiritual Metaphysics – Defining Metaphysics and Spirituality

Spiritual metaphysics is what we come to, or what comes to us, when we are ready to stop perceiving the world from a perspective of separateness. There are many aspects of being– physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. However, Spiritual metaphysics is the place where science and spirituality not only meet but support each other (Rather than Science vs. Religion). Few can deny having some of the following experiences where at least two of these aspects seemed oddly connected.

· Thinking of a long lost friend and then running into him or her at the store.

· An ache in the middle of the back that suddenly dissipates once the decision has been made to forgive past hurts.

· Knowing something isn’t quite right and then finding out a relative has passed.

· A small prayer (or a large one) answered through the most extraordinary of circumstances.

These things would seem merely coincidental and our society has been trained to view these types of events as such. Yet, science itself is helping spiritual metaphysics by proving something amazing. These events are happening in a world that is not very separate at all; all life is energy and what is considered the physical and the non-physical is very much one and the same.

The philosophy of metaphysics was at first, a philosophy of causation, form and matter. However, it would only make sense that something that studies the nature of being and existence, both seen an unseen, would need to include religion, dreams, psychology, astrology, positive thinking, meditation, clairvoyance, yoga, reincarnation, extra-sensory perception, spirits, auras and countless related topics. In order to properly define metaphysics, it must include these issues that fall under spiritual metaphysics.

Without spiritual metaphysics, there is no way to fully answer questions about the meaning of life, the personal significance for being born, who and what God is, why one experiences suffering, what defines reality and many of the vital questions that each and every person at some point seeks an answer for. It is easy to call upon science, religion or the abstract and get easy answers for any of life’s questions. However, if that were enough, why isn’t it?

Spiritual metaphysics is not about finding a one-size-fits-all answer for life. Spiritual metaphysics can help an individual do away with the unsatisfying custom of casting life’s experiences away to coincidence, broaden his or her perspectives and aid in remembering what has been forgotten– our connectedness.
